Momoka Asano

I am a member of the Digital Tokugawa Lab, where I work with Professor Fabian Drixler on the Digital Atlas of Tokugawa Japan project. I recently completed my joint master’s degree in Transcultural Studies from Kyoto University and Heidelberg University. My research focuses on Christian persecutions during the Edo period in Japan, specifically the use of fumi-e, which were Christian images used to be trampled on to demonstrate anti-Christian beliefs. My MA thesis challenged common understandings of fumi-e as symbols of severe persecutions and Christian suffering, re-narrating the cultural flows of these objects to provide a more comprehensive history of fumi-e. In my free time, I enjoy knitting and dyeing yarns for my knits.
