Mildred Nakkungu is a Masters student in her final year of the MPhil in Southern Urbanism (Urban Studies) in the University of Cape Town. Her studies, supported by the South Africa’s National Research Foundation and the University of Cape Town’s Postgraduate funding office, are focused on urban theory in the Global South with a particular concern with the tendency to place cities on an urban hierarchy and how it affects discourse on African cities. Before undertaking her Masters, Mildred practiced as a Green (Sustainable) Building Consultant in Cape Town, working on multiple large-scale developments in the city, including Century City Urban Square and 117 on Strand. Whilst working, she studied part-time towards a Post-graduate Diploma in Sustainable Development (completed in 2019), which developed her interest in urban studies. Prior to this, se completed a Bachelor in Architectural Studies at Nelson Mandela University in 2015.
