Luke Roberts is professor of history at the University of California Santa Barbara. He is author of Mercantilism in a Japanese Domain (1998) and Performing the Great Peace (2013) and co-author with Sharon Takeda of Japanese Fisherman’s Coats of Awaji Island (2001). He researches early modern Japan using methodologies of local history to engage modern nationalizing discourses. His current project is a biography of an eighteenth century samurai done mixing methods of micro-history and social history.
