Visiting Professor
Dr. Eun-su Cho is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Philosophy at Seoul National University. Her area of focus is Korean Buddhism, Buddhist philosophy and gender issues in Korean Buddhism. She previously served as assistant professor in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Michigan. She received her PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. Her publications include Language and Meaning: Buddhist Interpretations of “The Buddha’s Word” in Indian and East Asian Perspectives, Jikji: The Essential Passages Directly Pointing at the Essence of the Mind, co-translated with John Jorgensen, and Korean Buddhist Nuns and Laywomen: Hidden Histories, Enduring Vitality, an edited volume on Korean Buddhist nuns. Her articles include “The Uses and Abuses of Wŏnhyo and the ‘T’ong Pulgyo’ Narrative,” and “Repentance as a Bodhisattva Practice—Wŏnhyo on Guilt and Moral Responsibility.” She was the founding director of the International Center for Korean Studies at SNU from 2007 to 2008, and served as president of the Korean Society for Buddhist Studies (Bulgyohak yŏn’guhoe) from 2012 to 2014.
