Samah Rafiq is a PhD candidate at the Centre for International Politics, Organization and Disarmament (CIPOD), Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. Her PhD is titled ‘Categorizing Bodies at International Borders: Mapping Risk Profiling in Human Mobility’. In her ongoing PhD work, she looks at three key aspects of human international mobility: (1) the practices that constitute the regulation of human international mobility, (2) states’ recent shift to profiling of all individual travellers along a spectrum of risk, and (3) the involvement of private actors in human international mobility management and what effects this can have on both states and individual travellers. Her PhD work attempts to unpack the idea of risk associated with contemporary forms of border control. It also explores the historical and contemporary notions of the conceptions of citizens and noncitizens, and the relationship of border policing and management to contemporary forms of nation-states. Samah Rafiq holds an MA in Politics and International Relations and a BA (Honours) in English Literature from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
